What is Gerontology?

Gerontology is the study of aging. It is an interdisciplinary field that involves  biological, social, family, and psychological processes, as well as providing services to older people.

Why gerontology?
The field of gerontology should grow in the future due to the baby boomers coming of age - retirement age! This means loads of job opportunities working with seniors. People are living longer, so these baby boomers potentially could be needing services for 30 more years of their lives!

  • 1 in 5 people will be 65 or older in 2030
  • 1/2 of those 65 or older are above the age of 74

Health and the aging process (HLTH 466)
HLTH 466 will prepare you to work one-on-one with seniors. In the class you experience what it's like to have functional disabilities, visit an assisted living home, visit a funeral home, and spend time with a senior. You will also learn the importance of living a healthy lifestyle as you age. TAKE THE CLASS! It's practical and fun!

Previous students have said about HLTH 466. . .
"Who knew how much a single college class can open your eyes and help you see differently?"
"I have put the knowledge I learned to good use."
"The gerontology minor helped my application stand out."
"I feel better equipped to address the unique needs of the population."
"There is no other class I've taken at BYU that has had a greater impact on me and my career."
