Gerontology Curriclum Requiremens -- Beginning Fall 2012

BYU undergraduate students may obtain a Minor in Gerontology or a Certificate in Gerontology. Classes taken as part of a major or university general education requirements also count toward the gerontology minor or certificate requirements. A student may complete the Minor in Gerontology and obtain a Certificate in Gerontology by completing both the Mentored Research Experience and Service Learning courses (6 credit hours total) and the core course (6 credit hours) and elective course (6 credit hours) requirements. After the core course requirement is completed, the remaining corse classes can be taken as electives.

Minor in Gerontology (15 credit hours)

1. Complete 3 hours from the following Mentored Research Experience courses:
 EXSC 497R: Undergraduate Research and Study (.5-4:0:Arr.)
 HLTH 491R: Mentored Research (.5-3:Arr.:0)
 NURS 491: Nursing Capston (2:4:0) and NURS 492: Clinical Practicum for Capstone Nursing (5.5:0:Arr.)
 PSYCH 499R: Independent Research (.5-3:0:0)
 RECM 497F: Special Topics and Research (.5-4:Arr.:0)
 SFL 403R: Research/Creative Works Practicum (.5-3:Arr.:Arr.)
 SOC 497R: Directed Research in Sociology (1-6:0:0)

2. Complete 6 hours from the following core courses:
 EXSC 387: Lifestyle and Chronic Disease Prevention (3:3:0)
 HLTH 466: Health and the Aging Process (3:3:0)
 NURS 291: Nursing Care of the Older Adult (2.5:2.5:0) and NURS 292: Clincial Practicum for Nursing Care of the Older Adult (1.5:0:Arr.)  NURS 293: Communication Lab for Nursing Majors (.5:0:Arr.)
 NURS 333: (Nurs-Soc) End-of-Life Care (3:3:0)
        or

3. Complete 6 hours from the following elective courses:

PDBIO 220: Human Anatomy (with lab) (3:2:2)

And other electives approved by the academic advisor.
